Atop of the tallest hill overlooking Florence is the
Basilica of San Miniato dedicated to
Saint Miniato. In 250AD he was beheaded
by a Roman Emperor for being a Christian and alleged to have picked up his head, crossed the
Arno river and walked
up the hill to where the church now stands.
The church facade is a classic example of
Romanesque architecture
with white and green marble dating back to the 11th century. The interior has a beautifully high ceiling with
decorated wooden beams and the floor is covered in a carpet of marble tiles. Two stone
staircases on either side connect to an unusual architectural feature called an
Ambo that leads to a vast
presbytery at the back.
